Complaints and Corrections

the sonification is a member of the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO), which regulates the UK’s magazine and newspaper industry. We abide by the Editors’ Code of Practice and are committed to upholding the highest standards of journalism. If you think we have fallen short of those standards and want to make a complaint, please write to us at complaints@thesonification.org. If we can’t resolve your complaint, or if you would like more information about IPSO or the Editors’ Code, contact IPSO on 0300 123 2220 or visit ipso.co.uk.

We reserve the right to make changes to this policy when required; your complaint will be judged against the policy as it was when you sent in the complaint.

Previous corrections

10th March 2023 – ‘“Abestos dust everywhere”: Nordic Mining illegally releases carcinogen’ was updated to clarify that Nussir, not Nordic Mining, planned to dispose of tailings in Repparfjord and that Nature and Youth and Young Friends of the Earth Norway are one and the same organisation. We’re sorry for the initial errors and are pleased to make the correction.

13th October 2022 – ‘Sediment leaks into Førdefjord from faulty silt curtain at Nordic Mining’s Engebø site’ was updated to clarify that the final photograph in the piece shows a surface water drainage ditch, not a creek. We’re sorry for the initial error and are pleased to make the correction.

24th April 2023 – ‘From The Understory / Alice Boyd’s immersive debut EP’ was updated to correct a reference to the 1995 BBC documentary The Private Life of Plants, which should have been the 2022 series The Green Planet.

19 October 2023 – ‘Researchers raise alarm over species-rich Norwegian fjord’s future’ was updated to remove the claim that IMR had warned of potential impacts on migration for sturgeon, which we incorrectly translated from the word ‘vinterstøinger’.

How do I make a complaint?

Before contacting us, please read the IPSO Editors’ Code of Practice to make sure your complaint falls within its purview.

We will not handle legal complaints or challenges within our editorial complaints process, nor complaints that are hypothetical in nature.

Please include a reference to the article you’re complaining about, the date it was published, the nature of your complaint, and which part of the IPSO Editors’ Code of Practice you believe it contravenes.

How will my complaint be handled?

If your complaint is taken up, we will send you an acknowledgement within 72 hours and our editorial board will consider the complaint. We aim to respond within 28 days, but complex cases may take longer.

If the editorial board upholds your complaint, we will promptly issue the relevant corrections and apologies on the page of the original article online, in the next print issue, and on this page.
